The untitled aquarelle on canvas, 46.5 x 29 cm, was created at the beginning of his time in the academy and shows unmistakable influences of Pablo Picasso, who was then regarded as a model for many art students. Nevertheless, there is also an independent interpretation.
Ernst Fuchs was an artistic prodigy. His early drawings are rightly regarded as ingenious and withstand any comparison with other graphic manifestations of the 20th century.

Ernst Fuchs è nato a Vienna nel 1930. Pittore, grafico, scultore, scultore, scenografo, compositore, autore, filosofo e visionario – un vero e proprio jack-of-all-trade dell’arte con una varietà di talenti esuberanti. Poiché suo padre era ebreo e dovette fuggire a Shanghai dopo l’Anschluss d’Austria, l’allora ottoenne Ernst Fuchs fu ostile e battezzato cattolico romano nel 1942. Lui stesso ha scelto il suo nome battesimale: Ernst Peter Paul, dopo Rubens, il suo pittore preferito. Dal 1942 Ernst Fuchs ha insegnato disegno e pittura da Alois Schiemann all’età di dodici anni, e dal 1946 al 1950 ha studiato all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Vienna; il suo insegnante è Albert Paris Gütersloh. Insieme ai suoi compagni di studi Wolfgang Hutter, Arik Brauer, Anton Lehmden e il più anziano Rudolf Hausner, fondò la “Scuola viennese del realismo fantastico”.
